Is Reducing Meat Consumption Really Helping the Environment?

With issues of climate change and sustainability finding urgency all around the world, many experts advise us to try and limit our consumption of meat – owing to the environmental impact of the global meat industry. We find out if reducing meat consumption helps the environment, and how vegan foods are replacing the traditional meat industry.

We have more choice than ever before to choose what we eat. But are we making the right ones? With issues of climate change and sustainability finding urgency all around the world, many experts advise us to try and limit our consumption of meat – owing to the environmental impact of the global meat industry. But is it making any difference, and is meat consumption really destroying our planet? Let’s find out.

The global meat industry is nothing less than immense. In 2022, the global industry is worth over $2 trillion! With its presence so prevalent, the scale and intensity of meat production combined with projected population growth estimates show that current practices are bad for the environment.

Here is why:

IMPACT OF EATING MEAT

Health Risks

Diets high in red and processed meats, high-fat dairy foods, processed foods, and sugar are associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancers whereas diets rich in fiber, fruit, and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of these diseases.

Biodiversity Loss

Livestock production accounts for roughly 30% of current global biodiversity loss! With the need for more land to produce more meat, we are losing the lush flora of our planet for specifically animal rearing, only to have them killed in the end. The meat industry is causing an irreversible loss to our planet to produce meat.

Global Warming

According to studies, meat production is responsible for generating about 14.5% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, an astounding amount of meat is gone to waste both before and during the manufacture of meat. These practices are extremely harmful to our ecosystem, especially global warming which is directly caused by these greenhouse gas emissions.

Water Usage

About 29% of the total water footprint of the agricultural sector in the world is related to the production of animal products. By not purchasing meat products and avoiding such companies, you have the power to reduce the demand for meat, and thus – save water and conserve the planet.

IMPACT OF NOT EATING MEAT

If you’re looking to reduce your impact on the environment, going vegan is one of the best choices you can make. Here is why:

  1. Plant-based options high in protein and, alongside a well-balanced diet of plenty of fruit and vegetables, will mean you aren’t going without the vitamins you need. You will find equal amounts of natural nutrition in a vegan diet without hurting your

  1. Producing plant-based meat emits up to 90% fewer greenhouse gasses than producing conventional meat. If more people were to adopt veganism as a diet, the impact could cause a major shift in the ecosystem and help slow climate change.

  1. The global meat industry is notorious for polluting our oceans. When we leave land animals and fish off our plate, we are contributing to stabilizing the marine ecosystem as well as giving marine life a chance to thrive once again.

Reducing demand is the most significant factor in taking a stand against meat production. Ease your diet’s burden on the planet and choose veganism.

Because We Must – By Kathryn

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

I think recognizing the universality of human rights means knowing in your bones that deep down, everyone on the planet is pretty much just like you. Everyone experiences pain, joy, sadness, excitement, despair, hope, fear – just like you.

As it happens, the countries of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, India, and New Zealand have also recognized the rights of nature as legitimate and equal to human rights.

While that might look like that recognition is for the benefit of us humans (because we need a healthy planet to survive) (which is true), it strikes me more as a humble position; a modest recognition of the sentience and right to self-determination for every walking, crawling, creeping, flying, slithering, swinging, rolling, hopping, swimming, inching, soaring, stationary, phototropic bit of life.

Of course, that’s hardly enough to stop us from abusing ourselves and dismantling the biosphere. But, flawed and challenged as we are, there are also a whole lot of conscious, compassionate people trying to fix what’s broken, and bring justice and hope and peace to the world.

The International Yoga Festival & Health Expo is, at its core, a gathering of those folks, of spiritual seekers. Whether we’re talking about spiritual practices, dietary choices, or environmental action, we are all working to release the illusion that our human hearts beat to a rhythm that’s any different from the powerful, eternal pulse shared by all life.

Now, nobody ever said this work was easy. But we do it, as Corinthians says, with faith, hope, and love. We do it, as the Bhagavad Gita says, with our hearts fixed on the divine. We do it because we must.

We do it because we are the children of an utterly miraculous planet, a tiny aquamarine jewel floating in a sea of black velvet infinity. We are her warriors and her guardians and we do this work because our hearts demand it and because there is no one else to do it. We are, as the Hopi elders said, “the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

I look forward to seeing you (albeit virtually) at the Expo!

Speaking at 6th International Yoga Festival and Health Expo – by Anna

I was extremely honoured when I was asked to be a speaker for the 6th International Yoga Festival and Health Expo. Having only relatively recently entered the world of veganism, wellness and health, I feel very welcomed into the amazing community that the organisation has created. Their holistic approach to yogic life is inspiring and has so much to offer people from all walks of life. The message they promote is especially important during the difficult times that we are in now, which is why I am so pleased that the vegan community has been able to remain so connected on social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, where I personally have felt extremely supported and have even been able to inspire others to adopt a plant-based lifestyle (@vegan_werns). These platforms are where I am able to share new and exciting recipes, local businesses to support, and health and wellness advice. This is why I am certain that the 6th International Yoga Festival and Health Expo will be another platform where many people will be able to inspire and be inspired.

International Yoga Festival & Expo 2018 – Magazine

Events which are close to the heart and require you to work hard towards for a long time can leave you with a feeling of emptiness once they have been achieved. Yet, now on the day after the completion of the 4th Yoga festival and Expo, I sit with a sense of peace and calmness.
Yoga has resonated very closely with the people of Vancouver who attended the festival in great numbers and made it a success. My aim behind this festival has always been to be able to bring a piece of Indian culture and life to Canada. Seeing so many people experience a slice of satvic life made my heart gladden.

I would also like to thank all of the yoga schools and teachers that took part in this festival. All of them put their best foot forward and ensured that the unadulterated and true message of yoga could be spread to everyone who attended. An endeavor like this would also not be possible without our sponsors. I am happy to say that corporations were happy to support our cause and be a part of this event. The idea of sustainable living, respecting the environment, using resources responsibly, eating local, and adopting a simple vegan lifestyle as the yogis in India did thousands of years ago is something that is becoming more popular with people around the world. The fact that I and my team could help put together an event that is built around these ideas is immensely satisfying.

Every time we conduct this event, I am immediately flooded with ideas as to how the next year’s event can be made even better. I hope that everyone who was a part of this event this year will return next year and join the thousands that will become a part of our family for the first time.

I firmly believe that the world is aligning with ideas proposed by Indian scholars and yogic practitioners thousands of years ago and will continue to work in between events to help spread awareness about the same. To see that our event was attended by young people in majority made my heart gladden and fills me with hope for the future.

Thank you all.
