An insight into switching to a vegan diet. Learn how to stick by it.

A vegan diet has been trending in the town for a while now, and it is not at all difficult to comprehend why. The proven health benefits and positive environmental impacts of this plant-based diet are enough to support the fact. These sole benefits make it an optimal approach to follow.

What made the vegan diet’s popularity rise?

Vegan diet is an increasingly popular choice for those wanting to make a positive change. A plethora of reasons has become the active ingredients in the spreading popularity of this diet.

People’s growing consciousness of how their food choices affect their bodies, the environment, and animals is the main driving force behind this trend. Studies have shown that a vegan diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cancer. Due to the diet being naturally low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants make it another major factor in following a vegan diet for weight loss.

Celebrity backing has played a crucial role in heightening the levels of this trend. With more and more stars vocalizing their support for veganism, the movement has become more mainstream and accessible to a wider variety of people. This is obvious because when a celebrity follows a vegan diet, it encourages fans to do the same.

In addition to its health benefits, a vegan diet is more sustainable and better for the environment. The diet that is healthy in itself may also turn out to be the healthiest for the world since recent studies have shown that adopting a vegan diet can reduce our carbon footprint by up to 73%. This is because animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change. Reducing the demand for animal products can help reduce the amount of deforestation, water and air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Finally, a vegan diet is a great way to help animals. Eating vegan helps reduce the demand for animal products, which helps reduce the number of animals living on factory farms. This means fewer animals are killed for meat and other animal products.

These factors make the consumption of this diet appropriate to follow at every stage of life.

What is a vegan diet?

A vegan diet is a diet that is devoid of animal cruelty, to be specific. It abstains from all animal products and by-products, including meat, chicken, fish, dairy, eggs, honey, and gelatin. The products tested on animals or containing animal-derived ingredients, such as certain types of makeup or cleaning products, are often avoided by people following veganism.

Well, a vegan diet consists mainly of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds. However, it should always be kept in mind that a vegan diet can be plant base, but not all plant-based diets can necessarily be vegan. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients.

A vegan diet may be low in specific nutrients, such as calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B12, so it’s necessary to ensure that you get enough of these nutrients through fortified foods or supplements.

How does a vegan diet benefit your health?

“A vegan diet is the best thing you can do for your health and the well-being of our planet.” – says Robert Cheeke. Following a healthy vegan diet attracts numerous benefits while ensuring the well-being of both the planet and its inhabitants.

The plant-based diets are naturally low in saturated fat and cholesterol, which help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Additionally, plant-based diets are generally high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients, which help flourish health.

According to the facts stated by studies, people who follow a vegan diet have lower rates of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Second, plant-based diets are often more sustainable than diets that include animal products. These require fewer resources to produce, meaning they have less of an environmental impact than animal-based foods.

At many points throughout life, such as during pregnancy, nursing, infancy, youth, adolescence, and older adults, and for athletes, a well-planned vegan diet is a good, nutritious choice. Finally, plant-based diets are beneficial for your mental health as well. Eating a variety of plant-based foods can help reduce stress and provide a sense of well-being and is often associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety.

Overall, a vegan diet is a wonderful option to navigate for the betterment of your health, your mental well-being, and the environment.

However, It’s important to note that a vegan diet may not necessarily be a healthier option for everyone. People with specific health concerns may need to take extra steps to ensure they’re getting all the nutrients they need, and those with allergies or intolerances may need to avoid certain vegan foods. It’s always best to work with a registered dietitian to develop an individualized meal plan that takes into account your health needs and lifestyle.

Simple tips to make the switch to a healthy vegan diet :

Transitioning to a different diet can be intimidating in the beginning, however maintaining it with the right attitude can help you finish the race strong.

Here are a few steps which can make this shift smooth for you.

1. Go Slow

One of the best ways to transition to a wholesome, balanced vegan diet is to start slowly. Instead of immediately trying to eliminate all animal products from your diet, start by adding more plant-based foods. Replace meat with higher alternatives like legumes, grains, and other plant-based proteins. Swap dairy milk for plant-based milks like almond, oat, or soy milk. Swap the animal products in your diet by gradually increasing the proportion of plant-based meals and snacks. .

Going for a plant-based basket is important for a healthy, balanced diet. Experiment with different recipes and flavors to find healthy and delicious dishes you enjoy. Also, try to buy organic, locally-sourced produce whenever possible to help support sustainable farming practices.

2.Take time to plan your meal

Meal planning is a great way to help you transition to a plant-based diet. Set aside some time each week to plan out your meals for the coming days. This way you are eating a variety of healthy, plant-based foods throughout the week without doing much hustle. This helps you stay organized and on track with your new diet.

3. Cut down on meat and stock up healthy

Jumping on veganism bandwagon requires loads of efforts and planning. To initiate focus on adding more plant-based foods to your diet before worrying about removing animal products. Start by adding some other great options like fruits and vegetables to your meals.

Change the proportion of animal and plant based food on your plate rather than completely eliminating animal products. This will help you make a gradual but successful transition to a plant-based diet.

Also, you may try some plant-based alternatives. If you’re used to having a certain type of animal-based dish, try to find a plant-based version of it. This will make the transition easier and more enjoyable.

4. Experiment with your food by knowing it

Plant-based cooking can be a great way to expand your culinary knowledge and try something new. Try out different recipes that feature different ingredients or cooking techniques. You may even find some recipes you love and will want to make them a regular part of your diet.

Also, don’t be afraid to get creative with your food. Vegan cooking is versatile, and gives you the opportunity to try something you’ve never tried before.

5. Never shy away to take help

Making a big change in your diet can be overwhelming, and it’s important to have the support of your family and friends in this time. Ask them to help you stay on track by providing encouragement and moral support.

Changing your diet might be overwhelming initially however when transitioning to vegan diet, it’s important to have a plan of action in place. Setting achievable goals for yourself and tracking your progress help you stay on track and stay motivated.

Dairy Giant ‘Lactalis Canada’ To Go Permanently Plant-Based

French dairy giant Lactalis has announced that it will be shutting down all dairy products in its Canadian facility starting from September 20th. This huge shift comes as a response to consumers’ demands for saying no to animal cruelty and choosing plant-based as a lifestyle.

While the dairy market has been witnessing a subsequent decline in demand and production – thanks to the increased awareness of what goes on behind the scenes in these facilities – Canada is making waves as one of the most prominent countries at the forefront of saying no to animal cruelty.

Nestled in the town of Sudbury in Canada, Lactalis believes the “long-term volume decline” and “increased costs in the fluid milk market in Ontario” had led them to this decision of bringing a halt to manufacturing. The rising surge of healthier milk alternatives in the region has also pushed this decision ahead.

However, this is just another feather in the brand’s conscious hat – they are already well-known for their Sensational Soy and Lactantia Margarine which are two of the leading plant-based and vegan products in the region today.

How Mental Health Affects Parent-Child Connection

The early life phase of children is essential for their cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral development. In their growing years, it is equally important for parents to take care of their own mental health in order to positively impact their little ones.

In recent years, studies have discovered that 18.2 percent of parents suffer from mental illness and 3.8 percent of parents suffer from chronic mental issues. Children who are exposed to these parental mental health problems are of growing concern as their caretakers lose themselves in this battle of their minds.

HOW PARENTS SHOW SYMPTOMS

Parents’ psychological problems may lead to negative parenting behaviors, lack of attention to children’s needs, or increased dysfunction within the home. Mental illnesses can in turn cause a myriad of physical health problems which can be exhausting on both the parent and the kid. Cases of abuse are not rare as parents dive deep into frustration, feeling helpless.

With chronic mental illness, parents may grow unable to step up and perform their duties as functioning adults – failing to provide a safe and secure growing environment for their kids.

HOW CHILDREN INTERNALIZE PARENTAL ISSUES

Toddlers are sensitive to changes, be it, physical, internal, or behavioral. Growing up with a disturbed parent can cause the kid to isolate themselves at school, struggle with concentration and maintaining friendships, and develop unhealthy coping mechanisms.

As adults, they also might live with the constant fear of turning out to be like their parents which can cause several other emotional problems. They may also harbor physical health problems.

It really is a cycle. In order to prevent mental health issues from disrupting healthy parenting and childhood, it is important that:

  1. The child has someone to talk to – a guardian, friend, or therapist, to process their feelings.
  2. The child has not been kept in the dark about their parent’s illness, but rather duly informed.
  3. The parent is seeking the right help for their diagnosis and is transparent with their child about it.
  4. There are sufficient boundaries laid between the parent and child so as to maintain a healthy long-term connection.

Curating A Plant-Based Diet For Your Toddler

Health truly is wealth, and the earlier we start investing the better. If you have been wondering about guiding your little one to a plant-based or vegan diet from an early age, fret not – here are all the answers you wanted to your initial questions.

When it comes to plant-based vegan diets, many would fear going cold turkey on animal-based products. However, it is good to note toddlers don’t have to immediately do that. A good plant-based diet for kids constitutes the majority of it being whole, plant-based sources in 0lant based diet for toddlerstheir daily diet. As long as they’re getting the right nutrition (calories, proteins, and micronutrients), no vegan or plant-based diet is inapt for toddlers.

In fact, plant-based diets are known for reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, healthy weight management, strong immunity, and better brain health! Here are three ways your kid can ease their way into healthy vegan eating:

  1. Pay attention to proteins: Some parents might be wary of their kids not eating enough protein, but plant-based sources are more than nutritious to tick off your growing kids’ protein needs. Make sure to include beans, nuts, quinoa, cauliflower, and soy and its products to increase their daily nutritional value.
  2. Allow them to experiment for themselves: Instead of sticking to a rigid food plan, allow your little one’s space to get creative and choose their choice of food for themselves. If they’re not fond of a certain green item, let them say no and pick alternatives of their choice. It is especially important to be mindful with picky eaters to help them build a healthy relationship with their diet in the long run.
  3. Note the must-haves: Some of the must-include food items would include kale, broccoli, soy milk, hummus, potatoes, lentils, seeds, chickpeas, tofu, and dried fruits. These make up the foundation of your kid’s plant-based lifestyle, so make sure they’re eating this plenty.

Remember: It is not about restricting but making healthy eating a lifestyle choice for a better future for your kids.

Turkey Bans Vegan Cheese – Why?

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recently announced a ban on the production and sale of vegan cheese alternatives that look like traditional dairy cheese. The legislation claims that calling dairy alternatives “cheese” will mislead shoppers.

Stating that “products that give the impression of cheese cannot be produced using vegetable oil or other food ingredients,” plant-based companies in Turkey will have to face fines and legal action unless all production and sales have been put to a halt.

This makes Turkey one of the least vegan-friendly countries in the world today.

In response, the Vegan Association of Turkey (TVD) has met this ban with an immediate lawsuit claiming this “violates the right of access to food of all consumers who have adopted a vegan lifestyle.” The association has also launched a petition through Change.org, aiming to collect public support.

With rising demands for dairy alternatives in markets all across the world, many countries, such as France and America, have already begun to halt the prominence of vegan alternatives in several states. This poses a direct violation to the independent lifestyle choices of consumers who prefer to go vegan.

Canada Shows Support for New Plant-Based Manufacturing

Catering to the increasing demand for plant-based and vegan alternatives in the market, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, recently invested over $1.4 million in funding for Big Mountain Foods 2 Ltd. in Delta, British Columbia.

Based in Vancouver, Big Mountain Foods 2 Ltd. is a women-led homegrown company manufacturing natural and vegan foods since 1987. Their aim is to bring forth sustainably produced and zero-waste vegan protein foods using high-quality local ingredients. Some of their well-renowned items include Mushroom Bites, Broccoli Boost Veggie Grounds, and The Original Veggie Patty.

With Canada emerging as one of the most vegan-friendly regions around the world, the government has extended its support towards the brand and announced this whopping investment for manufacturing plant-based whole foods – credit to the increasing health awareness of consumers across the country.

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, states, “Plant-based foods are growing in popularity as Canadians are increasingly looking for options to incorporate greater variety into their diets. Investing in businesses like Big Mountain Foods 2 is establishing Canada’s position as a global leader in this industry while increasing consumer choice of alternative protein options.”

The brand’s plant-based soy-free tofu, already having hit and encouraged the markets, is a further testament to Canada’s growing concern for the conservation of our planet with plant-based and vegan innovations. We hope for further similar growth and change.

Clean and Green: Rise of The Vegan Beauty Industry

Projected to reach $21.4 billion by 2027, the vegan beauty market has been considered a niche. Today, our vanity shelves are stocked with cruelty-free labels – thanks to the rising awareness and demand for brand values. Here is how and why the beauty industry is slowly turning to non-animal-based products.

While the clean beauty notion has been around for years, it was truly during the pandemic that consumers turned inwards and began to seek brands that share the same values as them. In a world battling climate change, excessive pollution, and a highly sedentary lifestyle, consumers today hold themselves highly accountable for staying aware of what goes into their favourite products, and eventually on their skin.

WHAT MAKES BEAUTY “VEGAN”?

Much like the vegan diet suggests, vegan beauty is that containing no products derived from animals. The terms cruelty-free and vegan often go hand-in-hand, but it is to note they can’t be interchangeable. Where vegan signifies no animal products have been used in production, cruelty-free denotes the same product has not been tested on any animals.

(Fun fact: the first vegan beauty product can be traced back to 1990 when luxe beauty brand Estee Lauder decided to omit animal products in its formulations.)

Honey, gelatin, glycerin, and retinol are some common ingredients omitted from the vegan beauty shelf. Plant-based alternatives are taking over animal byproducts, and where they don’t, research is doing a commendable job of producing these eco-friendly counterparts.

WHY IS VEGAN BEAUTY NEEDED?

  1. It is subtle for all skin types. Vegan products are well known for being less aggravating on the skin with more efficiency.
  2. It is eco-friendly. By reducing the strain on its environment, the vegan beauty industry directly helps conserve the crippling environment with less greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Supports animal welfare. Lest we say more?

You can take a walk through any major beauty section and be delighted to find not only vegan but plant-based and traditional beauty ingredients in their collections. Where science has its own place in the industry, today the brand value lies in non-animal-based and byproduct formulations. This rising concern for the conservation of the environment is no longer gone unseen.

Beauty giants such as Target, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty are all compliant with this new age of beauty and makeup. Further brands like The Ordinary, Kylie Cosmetics, Milk Makeup, E.L.F Cosmetics, Pai Skincare, Cake Beauty, and many many more are now cult-chosen worldwide for their 100% vegan selections!

A completely conscious beauty dream may still be that – a dream – but the dots are being connected and will soon be a turnover for both brands and consumers. A revolution awaits.
