Clean and Green: Rise of The Vegan Beauty Industry

Projected to reach $21.4 billion by 2027, the vegan beauty market has been considered a niche. Today, our vanity shelves are stocked with cruelty-free labels – thanks to the rising awareness and demand for brand values. Here is how and why the beauty industry is slowly turning to non-animal-based products.

While the clean beauty notion has been around for years, it was truly during the pandemic that consumers turned inwards and began to seek brands that share the same values as them. In a world battling climate change, excessive pollution, and a highly sedentary lifestyle, consumers today hold themselves highly accountable for staying aware of what goes into their favourite products, and eventually on their skin.

WHAT MAKES BEAUTY “VEGAN”?

Much like the vegan diet suggests, vegan beauty is that containing no products derived from animals. The terms cruelty-free and vegan often go hand-in-hand, but it is to note they can’t be interchangeable. Where vegan signifies no animal products have been used in production, cruelty-free denotes the same product has not been tested on any animals.

(Fun fact: the first vegan beauty product can be traced back to 1990 when luxe beauty brand Estee Lauder decided to omit animal products in its formulations.)

Honey, gelatin, glycerin, and retinol are some common ingredients omitted from the vegan beauty shelf. Plant-based alternatives are taking over animal byproducts, and where they don’t, research is doing a commendable job of producing these eco-friendly counterparts.

WHY IS VEGAN BEAUTY NEEDED?

  1. It is subtle for all skin types. Vegan products are well known for being less aggravating on the skin with more efficiency.
  2. It is eco-friendly. By reducing the strain on its environment, the vegan beauty industry directly helps conserve the crippling environment with less greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Supports animal welfare. Lest we say more?

You can take a walk through any major beauty section and be delighted to find not only vegan but plant-based and traditional beauty ingredients in their collections. Where science has its own place in the industry, today the brand value lies in non-animal-based and byproduct formulations. This rising concern for the conservation of the environment is no longer gone unseen.

Beauty giants such as Target, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty are all compliant with this new age of beauty and makeup. Further brands like The Ordinary, Kylie Cosmetics, Milk Makeup, E.L.F Cosmetics, Pai Skincare, Cake Beauty, and many many more are now cult-chosen worldwide for their 100% vegan selections!

A completely conscious beauty dream may still be that – a dream – but the dots are being connected and will soon be a turnover for both brands and consumers. A revolution awaits.

Guide To Building Muscle On A Plant-Based Diet

Building muscle on a vegan diet can be daunting at first. “But we can’t eat meat!” “What about our protein intake?” “Plant-based foods don’t help gain muscle.” Wrong, wrong, wrong. Here is how (and why) bodybuilders can go vegan to reach their goals.

WHAT CONSTITUTES A VEGAN DIET FOR BODYBUILDING?

When it comes to bodybuilding, nutrition is one of the most important elements one needs to be mindful of. It takes careful planning to program an adequate meal plan that will not only help your body and muscles grow but also achieve all the essential nutrients it requires.

As a vegan, the latter could be tough. With animal-based products struck clean off of your list, it is often considered risky to go on this diet without the right amount of protein entering your body. But that is no longer a given and you can check out our list of plant-based protein-rich foods to assure that: https://yogahealthfoundation.com/10-best-vegan-protein-sources/.

Here is how one can transition to a proper plant-based vegan diet that will aid their bodybuilding goals:

Guide To Building Muscle On A Plant-Based Diet

  1. STOCK UP ON STAPLES: The vegan diet consists of many staples that are necessary to lay the foundation for a good meal plan. Including foods highly rich in proteins, make sure to consume plenty of those rich in fibers, antioxidants, and other important minerals which form the basis of your muscle gain. Legumes, beans, green leafy vegetables, and other such must-haves can be found here: https://yogahealthfoundation.com/7-calcium-rich-foods-that-arent-dairy/.
  2. TRACK YOUR INTAKE: Now that you have laid down the basis of your vegan meals, get into the habit of tracking your nutrient intake. It is important to understand what your body might be lacking in the long run, so make sure to eat mindfully and consume the right amount of nutrients on daily basis. Monitoring will help you assess if this diet is well-suited for your body as a lifestyle.
  3. SAY YES TO SUPPLEMENTS: As a vegan, meeting certain nutrient requirements will be dependent on external supplements. Creatine, known as the most essential (and one of the healthiest!) supplements for bodybuilders, shall easily be part of your diet. Caffeine for a pre-workout energy boost, beta-alanine for improving exercise performance, and soy protein for tapping your protein quota are other essentials that shall aid your vegan journey.
  4. WORK OUT: Fitness is all about two aspects – food and exercise. While you have the food section organized, working out as a vegan bodybuilder takes another route. While sadly there are no vegan-specific workouts, it is a green light for you to personalize your regimes as per your comfort. Adjust your training frequencies to four times a week, use heavy or light weights, take rests of two minutes between workouts, and switch between different regimes. But remember, a plant-based diet will never hold you back from reaching your goals.
  5. KEEP LEARNING: As beneficial as veganism can be for bodybuilding, there is more room for concrete discussion on the subject. For optimal results, one should keep acquiring new knowledge on their vegan meal plans and through consistent efforts, incorporate more or less of the diet into their lifestyle as required. Remember: there is no one suit that fits all.

BENEFITS OF GOING VEGAN AS A BODYBUILDER

  1. Promotes Better Gut Health: Studies have shown that people who eat vegan carry a better amount of healthy bacteria in their gut – thus promoting an overall healthier digestive health. Good gut health has also been associated with better mental health and the risk of fewer brain-related disorders.
  2. Allows Easy Weight Management: The exclusion of animal-based products makes the vegan diet low in fat and a calorie which makes it easier for bodybuilders to maintain their required body weight in the long haul.
  3. Reduces Risk of Heart Diseases: Veganism has long been associated with protecting the heart and reducing the risk of heart-related issues. For a bodybuilder who is constantly pushing their limits and is at high risk of strokes and heart failure, going vegan can be great reassurance for healthy heart health.

Embrace The Power of Yoga

“To me, yoga was always more than the practice of asanas learning to contort your body in different positions. It was a guide map to a higher consciousness and a more evolved and kinder way of life.”
By Vesna Pericevic Jacob

yogahealthfoundation, yogahealthfoundation2022, YogateacherVancouver, YogaclassesVancouver, VeganproductsVancouver, VeganfoodVancouver, adityatawatia, yogaposes, yogainspiration, yogapants, yogalife, yogafit, yogapractice, yogachallenge, yogagirl, yogateacher, yogamom,

I have been fascinated by yoga ever since I was a young girl. But opportunities to practice yoga and to know more about Yoga were few and far between while growing up in Yugoslavia. It was when I moved to India 18 years ago that I was able to practice and familiarize myself with the discipline.  To me, Yoga was always more than the practice of asanas learning to contort your body in different positions. It was a guide map to a higher consciousness and a more evolved and kinder way of life. This ‘guide map’ is as relevant today as it was when it was created more than millennia ago.

The pandemic has brought out the best and worst of humanity.  Right now we need the best to outweigh the worst. For this, I want to focus on two ‘angas’ of Ashtanga Yoga – Yama and Niyama. I truly believe if we as a society can model our lives on just these two angas, we have the readymade blueprint to the more evolved and kinder way of life earlier.

YAMA

This first limb, Yama, refers to vows, disciplines or practices that are primarily concerned with the world around us, and our interaction with it. While the practice of yoga can indeed increase physical strength and flexibility and aid in calming the mind, what’s the point if we’re still selfish, materialistic, and as a consequence, weak and stressed-out in day-to-day life? Ahimsa, Satya Asteya Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha can reintroduce us or reconnect with one’s ethical standards and sense of integrity, focusing on our behaviour and how we conduct ourselves in life.

NIYAMA

Niyama gives us self-discipline and spiritual observances. Regularly attending temple or church services, saying grace before meals, developing your own personal ‘rituals’ for self -improvement – this window looking inwards to ourselves will help shape our responsible behaviour to the outside world. To evolve to this higher plane we need a sound body to house a healthy mind, and for the practice of asanas and pranayama provides us with the tools to achieve that. Round this off with Dhyana – the state of being keenly aware, yet without focus. It is awareness without judgment or attachment; it is peaceful, meditative and precedes complete bliss.

Yoga as a way of life provides all the tools we need to cope with the world we are living in, especially the pandemic in a world where countries are looking inwards rather than lending a helping hand to those who need help the most.

I am reassured in a better state of the world by being associated with Yoga & Health Expo who believe in the Yogic way of life. They shine light on the importance of Yoga in such a rapid and steadfast world. Our very survival may depend on this!

Love & Light,

Vesna Pericevic Jacob

The Easiest Morning Yoga Guide for Novices

Practicing yoga first thing in the morning will not only increase your energy, focus, and flow for the rest of the day, but also place you in a positive state of mind to seize the day ahead.

Each day is a new beginning, and we shall make the most of it right from the moment we awaken. Stretch, breathe, and fully awaken your body first thing in the morning. How you begin your day plans out the rest of it, so here is a quick morning Yoga session that beginners can easily incorporate into their daily lives:

Diaphragmatic Breath

Known as pranayama, diaphragmatic breath is the first step to awaken your body. With one hand on your heart and the other on your belly in a sitting position, deeply inhale and exhale. This will help you tune in with your entire body, breath by breath.

Extended Child’s Pose

This pose is perfect for stretching the body after being in a singular position overnight. On all fours on your yoga mat, you will need to spread your knees wide, and let your stomach fall in between your thighs, and your forehead down to meet the mat. Then extend your arms in front of your body, palms flat. Inhale and exhale deeply. The extended child’s pose is great for your lower back and hips.

Cat-Cow Pose

Once on all fours on your mat, place your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then engage your abdomen, exhale, and stretch your spine upwards. Hold it here then let your spine relax as your stomach falls to the ground. Hold it here again. This pose is effective for stretching your spine and opening your chest.

Cobra Pose

For novice Yoga practitioners, you might know this as a part of Surya Namaskar. Beginners can begin their morning routine with just this one pose to open up their shoulders, chest, and abs. You will need to simply lay belly-down on your mat, and with your hands placed underneath your shoulders, gently extend your arms upwards – taking the weight of your whole body on them. Remain in this position for a while before pulling your arms inwards and letting your body fall to the ground.

Bridge Pose

If you have a long way of active walking, strengthen your hamstrings and glute with the Bridge first thing in the morning. As you lay on your back with your knees bent and feet relaxed, place your arms on either side, palms flat. Then push up through your feet to extend your hips towards the ceiling. Works great for the abdomen area too.

Twist Pose

A simpler pose you can practice while seated, gently twist your upper body from your core to the left, then to the right. Let your body decide the distance you want to take, and make sure not to turn from your shoulders.

Tip: Hold each of the 5 poses for 60 seconds before moving on to the next 5 minutes and you’re done!

5 Sustainable Ways To A Healthy Lifestyle

Connect with the blissful care of nature by choosing only plant based, organic and natural products in your day-to-day life. Simple and sustainable, here are 5 ways to build a lifestyle full of health and wellbeing.

STEP 1: CLEAR THE KITCHEN

The holy grail of health where food resides, ditch the plastic and poly-fiber and switch to clay and earthen cookware for your pantry. Instead of paper napkins that eventually lead to piles of waste, you can use cotton or bamboo dishcloths that can be washed and reused for years. Using glass and steel storage containers also assure not just durability and security but reduce the inclusion of plastic in your house. The less the better!

STEP 2: GO VEGAN

There is a multitude of ways to eat your way to a healthy lifestyle – you can make drinks instead of buying them, buy produce in season, grow your own herbs, and avoid processed foods including animal-based products. Say no to meat, and choose veganism that contributes not just to a good environment, but good health.

STEP 3: SHOP SLOW

One of the biggest hazards to our planet is fast fashion. According to waste statistics, the industry produces over 92 million tonnes of waste per year. The effects of fast fashion on the environment include CO2 emissions, water consumption, chemical pollution, and textile waste amongst many more. We can choose to shop sustainably by paying attention to how and where a collection was made, how ethical the fabrics used are, and the durability of the garments. Shop slow to live slow.

STEP 4: GREEN IS THE NEW GLAM

The beauty market is not behind on comprehending the necessity of sustainable and cruelty free brands. Nature vs chemicals – how does it get any easier than this? Look for brands and products that are vegan, plant-based, or paraben-free; skin care and makeup that actually nurtures you and the planet both!

STEP 5: TRAVEL LIKE A LOCAL

Living consciously is not restricted to just our immediate homes. According to recent studies, only 39% of travelers manage to make their travel trips eco-friendly. To begin with, select your stay smartly. Research on your destination where you can accommodate most sustainably. It is important to keep in mind your carbon footprint, so save paper on tickets and simply rely on digital receipts for your fare details. You can also choose to commute on foot instead of transport to reduce your environmental footprint as well as fit in some workout.

Remember – it all starts with us. From one decision a day to the next, we can find ourselves and the planet growing healthier and better in the near future.

OUR PAST VENTURES

Celebrating the power of good health and wellbeing every year, our previous excursions have witnessed the health industry’s most coveted participation in our interactive yoga sessions, mindfulness activities, and sparked interesting conversations on holistic and eco-friendly wellbeing. Our Expo highlights the sanctity of leading a clean and green organic eating and the natural way of life.

Emerging strong against the pandemic, our 7th Virtual Yoga Festival & Health Expo 2021 was a resounding success with speakers Rachel Beau – Creator & CEO (PARTY STAR) of Rock’n’Beau Entertainment; Marlene Watson-Tara – long-time vegan, activist and human ecology enthusiast; Bill Tara – co-founder of Sunwheel Natural Foods in London, England; Dr. Matthew Nagra – Naturopathic Doctor, and many more experts guiding our guests on living in accordance with nature’s laws.
